Ladbrokes has halted wagering on BBC show the Great British Bake Off after a flurry of wagers triggered fears the winner's name might have been leaked.

"A run of bets" was placed for one contestant, lots of at shops in the Ipswich area, the bookie said.

It is not known which baker prompted the flurry or whether any candidates have connections with the Suffolk town.

The very first episode of the popular amateur baking contest aired on BBC One Wednesday evening.

It is the sixth series of the yohaig code program, which challenges 12 hopefuls to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

Each week the amateur bakers are to deal with a baking obstacle, with very little instructions, and present a "signature meal".

'Soggy bottom'

The bookie said a flurry of bets came in for among the 12 entrants whose odds started at 12/1 and were minimized to 6/1, 3/1 and then evens.

"We offered prices on Monday and, practically before the ink was dry, an uncommon variety of punters remained in a rush to back only one entrant," David Williams of Ladbrokes said.

"On Tuesday and Wednesday it was more of the exact same one-way traffic. That was enough to set our alarm bells sounding and, as a preventative measure, we suspended our betting.

"Hopefully, we'll go back up with modified odds sooner rather than later, however we didn't wish to get caught with our trousers took down and a soaked bottom, so we've decided to relax until we are assured that Bake Off hasn't gone off already.

"When you see a run of bets like this promotion code for one entrant at the cost of everybody else that can be an indication to suspend betting for a bit to evaluate the circumstance," he added.

Several of the bets put were the optimum the bookmaker would consider wagers made on the show's outcome, and 90% were put on one entrant.

The suspension would not impact bets currently positioned, the business said.

The first contestant to be knocked out of the competition on Wednesday night was Stuart Henshall from Surrey.

The 11 staying entrants are from Berkshire, Lancashire, Cambridgeshire, London, West Yorkshire, Manchester, Essex, Swansea and 2 from Perthshire.
